Symfony's technology: where the contrast comes from
Symfony combines a diffractive echelette design with correction of chromatic and spherical aberration. Those engineering features are meaningful, but they do not make contrast or night vision identical for every patient. The FDA registration study and later trials are a better basis for expectations than a single optical-bench number.
The defocus curve: what the numbers actually mean
In the pivotal randomized U.S. trial, bilateral Symfony implantation produced distance vision comparable to the TECNIS monofocal control and significantly better intermediate and near acuity at six months. The triangle of trade-offs: pick only two out of three
There's no universal "best" presbyopia-correcting lens — there are three parameters, and you can realistically prioritize only two of them:
- Level of dysphotopsias (halos, glare, "starbursts" around light sources at night)
- Visual quality (contrast sensitivity, especially in dim light)
- Independence from glasses at near distance
The sharper the near vision a multifocal lens delivers, the more pronounced the night-time phenomena and the lower the contrast sensitivity — a direct consequence of splitting light between focal points. If minimizing night effects is critical for you, your path leads to EDOF lenses or bifocals with a minimal add. If maximum contrast in dim light is critical, that's EDOF too, but at the closest distance you'll likely need glasses for fine print. And if the priority is maximum near visual acuity specifically, then a trifocal or bifocal lens with a strong add is the answer — but with a higher risk of halo effects and reduced contrast at intermediate distance.
Symfony vs. Vivity vs. Zeiss AT LARA: three different ways to "stretch" focus
Symfony, Vivity and AT LARA use different optical strategies, but no product wins every outcome. Randomized data comparing Symfony and AT LARA found similar binocular depth of focus and similar distance, intermediate and near acuity overall, while AT LARA showed a wider monocular depth of focus at some thresholds. Vivity is non-diffractive and is often chosen when reducing diffractive rings is a priority, but its performance should be judged from its own clinical data rather than assumed from the label. My practical interpretation: compare the range you need, your night-driving tolerance and the quality of evidence for the exact model — not a marketing category alone.
