If your priority is the road and computer with some added near function, Symfony still has a coherent evidence-based role. If your priority is reliable small-print reading without glasses, call it what it is: the pivotal trial did not turn this diffractive EDOF lens into a trifocal.

First, what EDOF means

Extended depth of focus, shortened to EDOF, means that useful focus continues across a longer range instead of falling away immediately from one narrow target. Symfony uses a diffractive echelette optic: tiny ring-shaped steps that change how focus is distributed. That technical design does not decide the outcome by itself; the implanted-patient data below does.

The result at six months

In the randomized U.S. trial, 299 patients received bilateral Symfony or TECNIS monofocal-control lenses. Distance vision was comparable between groups. Intermediate and near acuity were statistically better with Symfony, both with and without distance correction.

The patient meaning is straightforward: Symfony moved useful vision closer than the monofocal control. But “better near than a monofocal” is not the same claim as “comfortable spectacle-free reading.” Ask for your expected acuity at the distance you actually use—around 67 cm for a computer or 40 cm for a book.

Glasses use: strong benefit, specific wording

At six months, 85.0% of Symfony recipients said they wore spectacles none or only a little of the time overall, versus 59.9% with the monofocal control. That is a real benefit. It is also a combined self-reported outcome across tasks, not proof that 85% read every size of print without glasses.

Halos, starbursts and glare

The same trial reported night glare in 2.7% of Symfony recipients, halos in 16.3% when mild-to-severe categories were combined, and starbursts in 8.9%. Halos and starbursts were reported with greater bother than in the monofocal group. The symptom method matters: a directed questionnaire will not produce the same percentage as a spontaneous report in another lens trial.

Residual refractive error and astigmatism can add blur or optical symptoms, so accurate biometry and a careful postoperative refraction are part of evaluating the result.

Contrast: do not fill a gap with a design slogan

Symfony corrects chromatic and spherical aberration, and those are meaningful optical features. They do not prove that patient contrast is identical to a monofocal lens. The FDA SSED warns about possible contrast reduction and notes that low-contrast acuity was not evaluated in the pivotal study; the publication presents mesopic contrast-sensitivity graphs. Read those as a quality-of-vision measurement, not as a direct prediction of one person's night driving. How to read a defocus curve

A defocus curve measures acuity while controlled blur is added in lens steps. Roughly, 0 D represents distance, −1.0 D about 1 metre, −1.5 D about 67 cm and −2.5 D about 40 cm. Lower logMAR means sharper vision. A curve is a group average, and curves from separate trials are not a fair head-to-head comparison unless the method, correction and types of patients match.

Comparing Symfony with Vivity or another EDOF

Symfony, Vivity and other EDOF lenses use different optical strategies. Vivity's own FDA trial found useful intermediate extension, but it did not meet the near-vision target set before the trial began. That does not tell us Symfony would win a direct comparison. The safe comparison is exact model against exact model in the same trial—or an explicitly indirect comparison with the limitation left visible.

  • What can I realistically do at my computer and reading distances without glasses?
  • How do my eye findings and night-driving needs affect whether Symfony suits me?
  • If I am unhappy with the result, what will you check before discussing further correction?
