The lens behind your pupil

Inside your eye, just behind the iris and pupil, sits a small, transparent, flexible structure called the natural lens. Along with the cornea, it focuses light onto the retina so your brain can form a clear image. In youth, this lens is crystal clear and flexible enough to change shape and shift focus between near and far objects — a process called accommodation.

A cataract develops as proteins and other structures inside this lens change. The lens becomes less transparent and scatters incoming light instead of focusing it cleanly. It does not grow or spread to another part of the eye—the change is inside the existing lens tissue.

The everyday picture I use is egg white turning from clear to opaque when it is cooked. The biology is not literally the same, but the point is useful: once the lens proteins have lost their transparent arrangement, drops or exercises cannot simply turn them clear again, just as a cooked egg cannot be made raw again.

Clouding is usually gradual

For most people, a cataract does not appear overnight. It develops slowly, often over several years, which is why early cataracts frequently go unnoticed. Cataracts are extremely common

Cataracts are not a rare condition — they are a normal part of aging for most people. Cataracts only affect the lens
