The four main IOL categories

Monofocal IOLs

Usually targeted mainly for one distance. If set for far, expect glasses for near and often for computer work.

Enhanced Monofocal IOLs

A distance-first lens with added intermediate range. The size of the gain depends on the exact model and target.

EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus)

A longer zone of useful focus. Different EDOF models use different optics, so near vision and night effects must be checked model by model.

Full Range / Trifocal / Multifocal

Aims to reduce glasses use from near to far. Diffractive models may produce more halos or starbursts than monofocal controls.

What is an intraocular lens?

An intraocular lens (IOL) is a tiny artificial lens that replaces your eye's natural lens during cataract surgery. It stays in your eye permanently and performs the focusing function your cloudy natural lens can no longer do.

No artificial lens can perfectly replicate a young, healthy natural lens. Each IOL design makes different optical choices — some prioritize clarity at one distance, others try to cover multiple distances. Understanding these differences is the key to a good decision.

The useful truth about IOLs: no current lens restores a young eye's natural autofocus. Compare each model by the task it improves and the outcomes its evidence actually measured; do not invent a worsening that the comparison did not show. Read the article →
